Wild Rye: Discover Our Wetland Wildlife

Bittern in Winter

Brett Environmental Trust

The Parkes Hide was constructed in 1980, overlooking Ternery Pool. By 2004 it was in need of replacement and enlarging to cater for school groups and wheelchair access.

The replacement of the hide and improving the access was funded by Landfill Tax through the Brett Environmental Trust, £14,033 and the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, £1,727. The new hide was built by Gilleards and is similar to the new Crittall Hide, with one viewing window suitable for wheelchairs. The path to the hide is suitable for some wheelchairs and there is an induction loop sound system. There is a seat outside in memory of Ron Banwell, who was an artist who lived in Rye Harbour and left a large bequest to the reserve. See photo here.
